Forren is a Norwegian surname, which originates from the name of a farm in the coastal areas of South Trønderlag county, an other variant is Faaren. In the local dialect 'Forra' means a furrow in the landscape, often with a small river. North Trønderlag county has a watercourse named Forra.
Some of the earliest official records of the Forren name dates back to 1667 (census) and early 1700s (parish registers). The first detailed census from 1801 shows a Forren farm in South Trønderlag and a Faaren farm in North Trønderlag. Towards the end of the 1800s the first Forren emigrants left for USA and Canada. Today there are about 90 individuals with the Forren surname in Norway, and a probably a small number living in North America. Most of the Forren descendants still live in the Trønderlag counties, while a few have moved to the capital area of Oslo and Akershus.
The Forren name also occurs on the British Isles, which is the likely origin for most of Forren emigrants to North America. Germany and Switzerland has a few individuals and places with the Forren name too.
